Full Synopsis

A disparate group of intergenerational British Punjabi women from the Midlands take a day trip to the seaside town of Blackpool with hilarious and heartwarming results. What is meant to be a fun outing, invites drama with shocking revelations of domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, interracial relationships, marital frustration and the inevitable tension between the conservative ‘aunties’ and their youthful liberal counterparts.

Based on the childhood trips of the film’s screenwriter Meera Syal (Goodness, Gracious Me), the debut feature by director Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham), Bhaji on the Beach is a charming comedy that is considered a landmark work for its intersectional exploration of the female South Asian experience in Britain.
