Synopsis

Held in a juvenile detention centre for committing murder as a minor, Akbar awaits his inevitable death sentence to be carried out when he turns eighteen. His best friend Ala, and his sister Firoozeh are determined to embark on the only plan that could stop the execution—to persuade the dead victim’s father to drop all charges. As the two navigate the legal and emotional complexities of this sisyphean task, a subtle romance develops between them.

In Beautiful City, Asghar Farhadi introduces us to the intricacies of diya or ‘blood money’, an aspect of Islamic law that governs the financial compensation that must be paid to the heirs of a victim in the case of murder. The film confidently delves into the deep interconnectedness and fissures that exist between Iran’s religion, politics and its peoples and how it plays out in the everyday.
