Synopsis

Bambaru Avith tells the story of the clash between a group of urban entrepreneurs and local fishermen in Kalpitiya, a fishing village in Sri Lanka. The city folk, headed by Victor, bring a business ethic of their own; with capitalistic tendencies that angers Anton, the local patriarch. Victor’s romantic involvement with a local village girl causes tensions in the village, climaxing to a series of violent events.

Restoration Info

This is the Asian Film Archive’s first restoration of a South Asian film. Bambaru Avith is celebrated as Pathiraja’s masterpiece and a seminal work of this filmmaker who is regarded as a pioneer of Sri Lankan cinema’s second revolution. The restored film marks a noteworthy achievement for AFA, becoming the first AFA-restored title selected for the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2020. The film has returned to screen in Sri Lanka and at international festivals like the Three Continents Festival and the San Diego Asian Film Festival.
