Full Synopsis

Taking over the mantle from his imprisoned father, an unassuming young caretaker Rakib (Kevin Ardilova) tends to an empty mansion belonging to aristocrats that his family has served for generations. The master of the house, Purna (Arswendy Bening Swara), returns to contest the local mayoral elections and Rakib is wired into a troubling father-son dynamic with the retired military general. Intoxicated by his proximity to power, Rakib offers to track down the vandals who defaced Purna’s campaign posters. Rakib’s act sets off a chain of violence, leaving the two embroiled in a maelstrom of guilt, hypocrisy, and moral corruption.

Makbul Mubarak’s directorial debut confronts the fraught conceptions of loyalty he grew up with as the son of a civil servant under Suharto’s military dictatorship (late 1960s-1990s). Through the troubled psyche of a young man caught in a paternal relationship that is at once benevolent and Machiavellian, Autobiography casts a critical eye on the legacy of Indonesia’s repressed histories. Deftly paced and masterfully composed, the film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, winning the FIPRESCI prize in the Orizzonti section of the competition. It has since been awarded at the Golden Horse Film Festival and the Singapore International Film Festival among others.
