Full Synopsis
August at Akiko’s is a mystical film that lives in the seams between dream, reality, and memory with a time-signature all of its own. Though categorised as fiction, the film is undeniably real and inhabits a documentary space that blends the lived realities of its protagonists, musician Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches, Last Lizard) and Buddhist Bed and Breakfast owner Akiko (Akiko Masuda), with the magically realistic undercurrents of the Big Island of Hawai’i.

This film is featured in the strand A Moment of Aloha, part of the Constellating Histories: Encountering Asian American Diasporas Onscreen programme. For the full programme lineup please click here.
