About the Tour

This guided night walk follows Forum Lenteng’s path in framing Fort Canning as a layered and contested historical site. Drawing connections between landscapes in Singapore and Indonesia, Gerald Sim and Luthfan Nur Rochman explore notions of power, taboo, and fabrication, both through the lenses of archaeology and visual culture. Moving from its foothills to the summit, and down to its subterranean defensive structures, walkers are invited to meditate and consider how archaeology, state, and spectacle interact. By tracing Fort Canning Hill and invoking other mountain/hilltop sacred landscapes across the Nusantara, the walk is a critical survey of the cultures of seeing and the layered meanings imposed on a site.

About your guides

Gerald Sim is a heritage professional who works in the intersections of Archaeology, Maritime Heritage, and Visual Culture. He was an alumni of the 2025 Film Programmer’s Lab and programmed the special programme “Refuge Island” for the Asian Film Archive’s Singapore Shorts programme.

Luthfan Nur Rochman (1993, Indonesia) is a filmmaker, curator, and writer. He is the Executive Director of Forum Lenteng and Festival Director of ARKIPEL, Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival. He also works with Milisifilem, a study group of film production through visual experimentation practices, initiated by Forum Lenteng and Candikala, which tries to contextualise the Hindu-Buddhist heritage and archaeological works in Indonesia through art practices.

AFA Programmer

With a background in archaeology and anthropology, Natalie has been a programmer at the Asian Film Archive for the last four and a half years, employing an archaeological lens behind programmes and exhibitions such as y2K dreams, styled + sutured, Retrospective: Edward Yang and Matter Matters (with Singapore Biennale). In a previous life, she was dedicated to the Archaeology Unit at the Nalanda Sriwijaya Centre of Yusof Ishak Institute, having been on excavations like Empress Place and Tonle Snguot site. She is also a filmmaker.

Things to Note

• Please arrive at the venue by the stated time. The walk will begin on time, and we will not be able to wait for latecomers.
• The walk involves approximately 30–45 minutes of light walking, including stairs, with several stops along the way. Total duration is expected to be 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on pace and discussion.
• This is a rain-or-shine event. Ponchos will be provided if needed.
• Please have dinner beforehand. Walking on a full stomach is good for digestion. Do feel free to bring hydration, mosquito repellent, and wear a pair of comfortable shoes.
• The walk takes place at night, in low-light conditions. Please be mindful of your footing and surroundings at all times.
• The route includes uneven terrain and areas with limited lighting. It may not be suitable for those with certain mobility or access needs.
• You are warmly encouraged to share your thoughts and ask questions during the walk, but only if you feel comfortable doing so.

There are two ticketing types for this event: (i) General and (ii) General + Film Screening. If you choose “(ii) General + Film Screening”, you will be entitled to a film screening of any choice within the Prasasti/Inscriptions programme. Do state in your order notes which film screening you wish to attend, or email ticketing@asianfilmarchive.org your film screening of choice.
