Synopsis

An eccentric French woman appears one day in a park in Korea, playing a child’s recorder. No one knows much about her past. To earn rent, she devises an idiosyncratic method of teaching French to two Korean women: penning poetic passages in French inspired by their life stories that they are to recite in the dark.

With sharp dialogue flitting between philosophy and petulance, teasing but never quite reaching the profound, Hong Sang-soo takes a loving, tongue-in-cheek jab at his mumblecore oeuvre. The auteur’s third collaboration with French actress Isabelle Huppert is a coldly comic vignette of mistranslations and misunderstandings, buffered with awkward serenades and glasses of makgeolli.
