Synopsis

L, a film student in India, writes letters to her estranged lover, K while he is away. Through these letters and newspaper clippings, fragments of their forbidden intercaste romance are interspersed with footage of student protests to compose a portrait of personal dreams, fears and longings, as well as the political climate of contemporary India.

Heralded as one of 2021’s most electrifying debuts and winner of the Best Documentary award at Cannes, A Night of Knowing Nothing chronicles the student protests that exploded under the nationalist rule of India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, including the 2015 student strike at the Film and Television Institute of India. By employing a melange of media forms (8mm family archives, viral internet videos, mobile phone shots), the voices of youth are captured in a deeply personal and entrancing way.
