Synopsis

“Why has Taiwan become what it is today? In fact, it’s closely connected to that era [1960s]. Clues from that time can help us understand the present, which drives my work. Taiwan’s environment is unique. So why do we rarely remind ourselves of this? It has to do with the lack of self-confidence collectively, as we overlook such matters when we lack confidence in ourselves.” —Edward Yang

Set in Taiwan during the repressive 1960s, A Brighter Summer Day follows Xiao Si’r, a high school student burdened with familial expectations, seeking solace in youthful indulgence. He falls in love with Xiao-ming, the girlfriend of a youth gang leader. Their young and idealistic romance collides with the harsh realities of life. Against Taiwan’s politically charged backdrop, the film offers a glimpse into the tragic destiny of the older generation. Released after martial law was lifted, Yang embedded his memories into the film and masterfully channelled intense emotions with its restrained narrative rhythm. His pursuit of better production conditions led to him establishing his studio, providing him the opportunity to fuel creativity with emerging talents.
