Synopsis
In 95 and 6 to Go, filmmaker Kimi Takesue finds an unlikely collaborator while visiting her resilient Japanese American grandfather in Hawai’i. A recent widower in his 90s, Grandpa Tom immerses himself in his daily routines until he shows surprising interest in his granddaughter’s stalled romantic screenplay. Kimi’s fictional love story—and Tom’s creative revisions—serve as a vehicle for his memories of love and loss to surface. Shot over six years in Honolulu, this intimate meditation on absence and family expands the vernacular of the “home movie” to consider how history is accumulated in the everyday and how sparks of humor and creativity can animate an ordinary life.
Alternately funny and poignant, 95 and 6 to Go has been celebrated for its subtlety and emotional resonance, earning recognition at international film festivals and winning the Special Jury Prize for Best Feature Documentary at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific International Film Festival and Indie Memphis.
About the Filmmaker
Kimi Takesue is an award-winning filmmaker recognized for her work across documentary, narrative, and experimental genres. Her films have screened widely at international festivals and museums including the Sundance Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, CPH:DOX, the Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). She has received prestigious honours, including the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Rockefeller Media Arts Fellowship. Takesue was the recipient of the “Breakthrough Award” and Fellowship from Chicken and Egg Pictures honouring women filmmakers who have made a significant contribution to the documentary field. Her recent film Onlookers was named one of the best documentaries of 2024 by The New York Times and had a theatrical release at Metrograph in New York City.
About the Moderator
Ella Raidel is a filmmaker and visual artist who investigates the socio-cultural dimensions of living together and the logic of image production. Her practice creates a discursive space for filmmaking, art, and research. She is an Assistant Professor at NTU Nanyang Technological University Singapore’s School of Art, Design, and Media. She employs documentary, experimental film, immersive storytelling, VR/AR technologies, and 360-degree filmmaking to explore new ways of seeing. Her work has been published in the book: Of Haunted Spaces – The Films of Ella Raidel Cinema, Heterotopias, and China’s Hyperurbanization, Edited by Prof. Ute Meta Bauer NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore 2023, NUS Press
