About the Programme

Seventy years ago, Taiwanese-language cinema ushered in the first golden age of Taiwan’s film industry. Its influence soon spread to Singapore and Malaysia, where these films became known as Hokkien-language (Amoy) films and formed part of the shared cultural experience of generations of Chinese audiences. Stories told in one’s mother tongue have a unique ability to connect with audiences. That was true seventy years ago, and it remains true today. The renewed interest in dialect-language films across Asia reminds us that these stories continue to resonate across generations.

To mark the 70th anniversary of Taiwanese-language cinema, the Singapore Film Society is honoured to present the Asian premiere of the Special Touring Programme, curated in collaboration with the Asian Film Archive. Bringing together newly restored classics, the programme celebrates the richness and diversity of Taiwanese-language cinema while revisiting an important chapter in Asian film history. It opens with Zhang Di Seeks Ah Zhu, starring the legendary Yang Li-hua, and closes with Romance at Lungshan Temple, paying tribute to another iconic star, Chuang Hsueh-fang—together honouring two defining actresses of the golden era. The programme also features the Asian Film Archive’s restored Hokkien-language classic Taming of the Princess, celebrating the shared cinematic heritage between Taiwan and Singapore and the continued efforts to preserve and restore these invaluable works.

Films are more than entertainment. They preserve the language, lives and emotions of their time. We hope this programme not only offers audiences an opportunity to rediscover these classics, but also shines a spotlight on dialect cinema—an enduring form of storytelling that continues to connect communities.
