Living alone in the heart of Kolkata, Miss Violet Stoneham, an ageing Anglo-Indian teacher reconnects with a former student Nandita, and her boyfriend Samaresh. Lying about Samaresh needing a quiet space to write his novel, the couple deceive Stoneham into allowing them to use her house for their romantic afternoon trysts. The trio forge an unlikely friendship that leads to tender joys and heartbreaking disappointments.

Known for her work in Bengali cinema, Aparna Sen started out as an actor at 16, in Satyajit Ray’s Teen Kanya (Three Daughters, 1961) and has starred in over 60 films to date. She made her directorial debut in 1981 with 36 Chowringhee Lane and went on to direct 15 more renowned films, with her most recent work The Rapist clinching the Kim Jeseok award at the Busan International Film Festival in 2021.

36 Chowringhee Lane is part of the film programme Parallels: Indian New Cinema (1965-1981). For the full programme, please click here
