Bereavement that follows from the death of his grandfather drives a young boy to spend most of his time outside the home playing with neighbours. This sense of loss becomes clearer when he asks an elderly stranger to teach him to play the harmonica, like his grandfather said he would. Soon, he learns to find solace in the emblems that remind him of his grandfather and his surrogate.
