Educators' Workshop
Advanced Film Literacy
|
|
This workshop is a follow-up to the Film Literacy course that introduced
educators to the use of films in the classroom to decode moving images. With
reference to scripts and film clips, participants will be led through exercises
that examine and explore the creative possibilities and processes through which
films are made. How are textual materials translated into audio-visual screen
experience? How do filmmakers use film styles and editing techniques to create
narratives and meaning? How are time and space conceptualised and manipulated in
cinema? Using Bordwell's Historical Poetics of Cinema, this workshop will
investigate the principles according to which films are constructed and how and
why these principles have evolved.
Tan Bee Thiam leads and directs the Asian Film Archive as its executive
director. After backpacking in China and India, he founded the Archive as a
non-governmental institution with the mission to save, explore and share the art
of Asian Cinema. At the Nanyang Technological University, he lectures on Asian
Film History and is the author of a forthcoming book chapter, An Independent
Spirit: Images of Resistance in Key Contemporary Singapore Films. He is the
curator-producer of the well-received Asian Film Archive Collection: Singapore
Shorts and Royston's Shorts DVD anthologies. He has sat on the jury panels of
international film festivals in Berlin, Locarno and Hawaii. A filmmaker and
photographer, his works have won awards such as the Best Photo Essay at the
US-ASEAN Film & Photography Festival.
